Description
The problem with competitor keyword research
Your competitors rank for hundreds of keywords you don’t.
Claude has no idea which ones.
Without a structured gap analysis, you’re guessing at content opportunities. Claude can tell you what keywords are — but it can’t tell you which ones your competitors own that you’ve completely missed, or which gaps are worth acting on first.
🔍
No visibility into which competitor keywords you’re completely missing — you don’t know what you don’t know
⏱️
Manual SERP checking takes hours and still misses the full picture — especially long-tail and MOFU terms
📋
Raw keyword lists with no priority order, intent mapping, or content plan — unusable without hours of extra work
The fix
A full competitor keyword gap audit,
inside Claude — with an Excel file at the end
Keyword Gap Analysis runs a structured comparison between your domain and up to 3 competitors, classifies every gap by type and priority, maps search intent and funnel stage, and delivers a color-coded Excel file with three sheets — ready to hand straight to your content team.

You still have to figure out what content to create for each keyword
Content type recommended for every gap: landing page, comparison page, or blog article — matched to intent automatically
Data lives in browser tabs and manual spreadsheets you have to build yourself
Color-coded Excel file delivered automatically — 3 sheets, frozen headers, autofilter, sorted by priority and volume

How it works
Two modes, one output — a fully prioritized gap report
1
SEMrush Mode — “Pull real data from my SEMrush account”
Real volume, KD, and CPC data from the SEMrush keyword database
The skill navigates to the SEMrush Keyword Gap tool in your browser, intercepts the API response, and pulls up to 5,000 keywords with exact search volume, keyword difficulty, and CPC. It then classifies every keyword, scores priority, maps intent, and exports the full dataset to a formatted Excel file — all without you touching a spreadsheet.
You: "Run a keyword gap analysis — my site is myblog.com,
competitors are siteA.com and siteB.com. Use SEMrush."
Claude: Navigating to SEMrush Keyword Gap...
→ Intercepting API token
→ Fetching keywords: 100... 300... 800... 1,240 total
→ Classifying gaps: 312 Critical · 448 Competitive · 480 Single-Competitor
→ Scoring priority: 186 High · 634 Medium · 420 Low
→ Building Excel file (3 sheets)...
✓ Done — keyword-gap-myblog-vs-siteA-siteB.xlsx ready
2
Claude-Native Mode — “No tools, just analyse with web search”
150–300 keyword gaps identified from SERP signals — no SEMrush account needed
Claude searches the web for each domain — discovering top pages, checking head-term rankings, pulling commercial and informational keywords, and extracting People Also Ask signals. Volume and keyword difficulty are estimated from SERP signals (ad presence, result quality, competition level) rather than a database. The gap classification, intent mapping, and priority scoring are identical to SEMrush mode.
You: "Run a keyword gap analysis — myblog.com vs siteA.com.
I don't have SEMrush, use Claude-native."
Claude: Researching myblog.com top pages...
→ Checking 10 head terms across both domains
→ Pulling commercial keywords: "best X alternatives", "X vs Y"...
→ Extracting PAA questions and long-tail signals...
→ 218 keyword candidates identified and classified
→ Note: volume and KD are SERP-signal estimates, not database figures

Strategic Summary — posted inline alongside the Excel file
Gap breakdown, funnel distribution, top 10 high-priority keywords, and opinionated recommendations
Every analysis ends with a strategic summary posted directly in chat: gap type breakdown by count and priority split, funnel distribution (TOFU / MOFU / BOFU percentages), the top 10 high-priority keywords by volume, and 4–5 opinionated strategic recommendations — naming specific competitors, specific keyword clusters, and specific content types to prioritize. Ready to hand to a content team without editing.

Priority Action List (Sheet 2)
The second Excel sheet filters to High + Medium priority keywords only, excludes Weak Position keywords, and sorts High-first then by volume — this is the ready-to-execute list your content team works from

Competitor Overlap Matrix (Sheet 3)
Summary tables showing gap type breakdown, which competitors own which keyword clusters, intent distribution, and the top 25 high-priority keywords by volume — the strategic overview for reporting to stakeholders

FAQ
Common questions
Do I need a SEMrush account to use this skill?
No. The skill has two modes: SEMrush (recommended if you already have an account, as it pulls real volume and KD data) and Claude-native (uses web search only — no SEMrush or any other paid tool required). Both modes produce the same Excel output format.
How accurate is Claude-native mode compared to SEMrush?
The gap classification, intent mapping, funnel tagging, and content type recommendations are equally reliable in both modes — Claude is reading real SERPs either way. The difference is in the numeric metrics: SEMrush gives you exact volume and KD figures from its database, while Claude-native estimates them from SERP signals (ad presence, competition level, result quality). Treat Claude-native numbers as directional rather than exact.
How many keywords does it analyze?
SEMrush mode pulls up to 5,000 keywords (capped at 50 pages × 100 per page). For most sites this returns 500–2,000 actionable gaps. Claude-native mode targets 150–300 keyword candidates, which covers head terms, MOFU commercial keywords, TOFU informational terms, long-tail questions, and People Also Ask signals.
What does the Excel file look like?
Three sheets: (1) All Gap Keywords — every keyword with gap type, your position, competitor positions, volume, KD, CPC, intent, funnel stage, recommended content type, and priority — color-coded and sorted by volume. (2) Priority Action List — filtered to High + Medium priority only, sorted High-first. (3) Competitor Overlap Matrix — summary tables showing gap breakdown, competitor coverage, intent distribution, and top 25 keywords by volume.
Can I run this for client sites?
Yes — commercial use is included with your subscription. You can run gap analyses for as many client domains as you need, and the Excel output is clean and professional enough to deliver directly to clients without modification.
