Description

The problem with GA4

You open Google Analytics.
You see numbers. You’re not sure what they mean.

GA4 is genuinely hard to read. The reports are buried three clicks deep, the terminology changed from Universal Analytics, and the difference between sessions, engaged sessions, and users is never clearly explained. Most people open it, screenshot the overview, and close it — without knowing which number matters, which channel is actually working, or what to do about any of it. Claude without this skill can’t open your GA4, can’t see your data, and can’t tell you anything specific.

GA4 reports are buried and renamed — finding the right data takes longer than reading it
Numbers without context are noise — sessions up 12% means nothing without knowing why or what to do next
Claude can’t see your GA4 without this skill — it can only give generic advice, not analysis of your actual data

The fix

GA4 Analyst navigates your live Google Analytics account, extracts real data, and delivers a sharp analysis with specific recommendations — all from inside Claude

Ask a question in plain English. The skill opens GA4 in your browser, goes to the right report, reads the numbers, and tells you what they mean — with a recommendation for what to do next. No manual report-pulling, no copy-pasting data, no interpreting metrics alone.

Without GA4 Analyst
VS
With GA4 Analyst

Claude can’t see your analytics — gives generic advice like “check your bounce rate” without knowing what your bounce rate actually is

Navigates your live GA4 account directly — reads your actual sessions, channels, conversion rates, and top pages before saying anything

You manually pull reports, copy numbers into chat, and hope Claude interprets them correctly — error-prone and time-consuming

No copy-pasting — the skill navigates to the right report, takes a screenshot, and uses page extraction to reliably capture the numbers

“Why did traffic drop?” gets a list of possible causes — algorithm update, seasonality, tracking issue — with no way to check which one applies to you

Pulls your actual channel breakdown before and after the drop, checks the traffic acquisition report, and names the specific source that changed

Analysis is limited to whatever you screenshot and paste — if you missed a relevant report, that insight is lost

Knows exactly which GA4 reports answer which questions — navigates up to 15 report types including Explore, Funnels, Path Analysis, and Search Console

No export — insights live in the chat and disappear when the conversation ends

Exports a full analytics report as a shareable Markdown summary or structured .xlsx spreadsheet with tabs for Traffic, Conversions, Audience, and Recommendations

Data quality issues go unnoticed — (not set) sources, sampling warnings, and tracking gaps never get flagged

Flags data quality issues before drawing conclusions — (not set) in source/medium, GA4 sampling warnings, missing conversions, and tracking gaps all called out

Data Quality Checks
Flags data issues before drawing conclusions — (not set) source/medium, GA4 sampling warnings, missing conversion tracking, and cross-device attribution gaps. Know when to trust the data.

How it works

A seven-step process from question to insight

1
Establish context — confirm property and date range
Takes a screenshot, confirms which GA4 property is active, sets the right date range

Opens Google Analytics, checks which account and property is loaded, and confirms the date range before touching any data. If there are multiple properties, asks which one to use. Never analyzes the wrong account.

2
Map question to reports — navigate directly to the data
Translates your question into the exact GA4 sections that hold the answer

“Why is traffic dropping?” → Traffic Acquisition report. “Which pages convert best?” → Landing Pages + Conversions. “Where are users dropping off?” → Funnel Exploration in Explore. The skill knows which of the 15+ GA4 report types answers each question — no manual digging.

Question type → GA4 location
"Why is traffic dropping?" → Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition
"What are my top pages?" → Reports → Engagement → Pages and screens
"How are conversions?" → Reports → Engagement → Conversions
"Where do users drop off?" → Explore → Funnel exploration
"What does my audience look like?" → Reports → User → User attributes
3
Extract and verify — screenshot + page text, never screenshots alone
Captures real numbers from the report — not just what’s visible, but what the page contains

Takes a screenshot and uses page text extraction to reliably capture metric values, table rows, and numbers — not just what’s visible on screen. If data is paginated, scrolls to get the full picture. If a comparison period is needed, enables it in the date range picker.

4
Analyze across 5 layers

Traffic trends and channel share, content engagement and problem pages, conversion rates by channel, audience demographics, and retention cohorts — all covered in one analysis pass.

5
Deliver structured output

Every analysis follows the same structure: Key Metrics, What the Data Shows, Standout Findings, Ranked Recommendations, and a Watch List for anomalies and data quality issues.

6
Forecast when relevant

On request, pulls 6–12 months of historical data and builds three scenarios — optimistic (current growth continues), base (seasonal patterns applied), and risk (declining trend unaddressed).

7
Export the report

Saves a Markdown summary or builds a structured .xlsx spreadsheet — Traffic, Conversions, Audience, and Recommendations tabs — ready to share with stakeholders or your team.

📊 mysite.com — Analytics Snapshot
Period: 1 Jun – 26 Jun 2025 | Compared to: 1 May – 26 May 2025

KEY METRICS
  Sessions: 14,832 ↓ 18% vs prior period
  Users: 11,204 ↓ 16%
  Organic: 8,940 ↓ 24% ← main driver
  Direct: 3,100 ↑ 4%
  Paid: 1,200 ↑ 2%

WHAT THE DATA SHOWS
Organic search is the source of the drop — down 24% while Direct and Paid held flat.
Within Organic, the Traffic Acquisition report shows Google / organic fell from 9,400
to 7,100 sessions. The drop began around June 5th, which aligns with Google's
June 2025 core update rollout window.

The pages most affected are the three long-form guides in the /resources/ section —
each lost 30–40% of their organic sessions. Engagement rate on these pages actually
improved slightly (from 54% to 61%), suggesting intent match is fine but rankings fell.

STANDOUT FINDINGS
1. Core update correlation — drop timing matches June update; not a technical issue
2. /resources/ pages hit hardest — content quality review warranted for these 3 URLs
3. Direct traffic stable — brand health unaffected; this is purely a rankings issue

RECOMMENDATIONS (ranked by impact)
1. Audit the 3 affected /resources/ pages against top-ranking competitors for E-E-A-T signals
2. Check GSC for any manual actions or crawl errors introduced in early June
3. Hold on new content — don't dilute focus; fix existing pages first

⚠️ WATCH LIST
· (not set) accounts for 8% of source/medium — UTM tagging gaps on some campaigns
· Sampling warning appeared in the Funnel Exploration report — treat funnel data as directional

FAQ

Common questions

Does this work with Universal Analytics (UA) or only GA4?
GA4 only. Universal Analytics was sunset in July 2023 and is no longer collecting data. If you’re still accessing historical UA data, the skill can navigate those views but the report structure and metrics will differ from the GA4 navigation map.
Does Claude need direct API access to my GA4 account?
No API connection needed. The skill navigates your live GA4 account in your browser — the same way you would manually. You need to be logged into Google Analytics before using the skill, and it works within whatever permissions your account has.
Can it handle multiple GA4 properties?
Yes — if you have multiple properties, the skill takes a screenshot, identifies the account switcher dropdown, and asks which property to work with before pulling any data. It won’t assume the active property is the right one.
What happens if GA4 isn’t open or I’m not logged in?
The skill navigates to analytics.google.com, takes a screenshot, and checks the state. If it sees a login screen, it tells you and waits for you to sign in before continuing. Nothing proceeds until the correct account is confirmed.
